Brief Biography
Bio of Jong-Moon Chung
Jong-Moon Chung (IEEE Fellow) received B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronic engineering from Yonsei University and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, where he was an award-winning inductee (in 1997) to the Epsilon Chapter of the HKN (Eta Kappa Nu) electrical and computer engineering honor society. From 1997 to 1999, he was an assistant professor and instructor at the Pennsylvania State University (University Park Campus, PA, USA) in the Department of Electrical Engineering. From 2000 to 2005, he was with the Oklahoma State University as a (tenured) associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Since 2005, he has been a (tenured) professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and is currently the Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and (joint appointment) professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, College of Medicine, all at Yonsei University (Seoul, South Korea).
Dr. Chung has also been serving as an advisor and PI (Principal Investigator) for Samsung Electronics, LG, LG Display on smartphones, smartTVs, AR/VR/MR/XR, and advanced mobile communication technologies, and has been a Specialist for the MND (Ministry of National Defense) for the Republic of Korea government on C4I, tactical datalinks, satellites, IoT, military drones, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), and UGVs (unmanned ground vehicles) since 2005. Since 1996, he has conducted many R&D projects for the US DoD, military contractors, and industry on next generation communication systems, GEO/LEO satellite communication, UAVs, UGVs, Mobile PCs, and PDAs. For example, from 2000, Dr. Chung served as the PI of the ‘Hybrid Wireless & Wired Networking Systems’ project of the DARPA MICE (Mesoscopic Integrated Conformal Electronics) program of the US DoD (matched with additional OCAST government funding). He led the development of the first wireless networking systems using MICE technologies that were capable of rapidly prototyping customized electronic devices and circuits on conformal substrates and low temperature substrates directly from computer aided design data, which has evolved into the modern micro-electronics 3D printing technology. As the PI, he has also conducted many successful advanced projects which include government projects with the U.S. DoD ONR (Office of Naval Research), NRL (Naval Research Laboratory), and AFRL (Air Force Research Laboratory).
Currently he is conducting multiple projects for the Hyundai Motors Group on future autonomous vehicles and vehicle electrification. Since 2021, Dr. Chung has been leading the development (as PI) of South Korea’s largest Metaverse ‘XR (eXtended Reality) Flagship Project,’ which is one of the world’s first XR deep digital twin-based emergency training metaverse systems. Before this, he developed South Korea’s first MR (Mixed Reality) AI (Artificial Intelligence) government disaster training system, which was awarded two (in 2019 and 2021) of the highest government awards. He is an expert on real-time video streaming technologies based on 5G multi-RAT, Wi-Fi, MPTCP (Multi-Path TCP), MIPv6 (Mobile IPv6), MPEG-DASH (Moving Picture Experts Group - Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP), H.264, H.265, H.266, TCP/IP, UDP/IP, network security, Blockchains, edge & cloud computing (e.g., AWS, Azure, VMware), AI, big data systems, and CDN (Content Delivery Network), which are also the core technologies that are used in Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Starz, YouTube, Skype, WebEx, Zoom, etc. In addition, he has developed many advanced smartphone technologies for Samsung (Galaxy), LG (Optimus, V) and Google (Nexus). He is currently the Vice President of the IEEE CTSoc (Consumer Technology Society) and the IEEE PSES (Product Safety Engineering Society), Senior Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, Section Editor of the Wiley ETRI Journal, EiC (Editors-in-Chief) of the KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Systems, and former Editor (from 2011 to 2021) of the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. Dr. Chung has also served as the General Co-Chair of the 2022 IEEE ICCE (International Conference on Consumer Electronics) and has contributed to many international conferences, including serving as the General Chair of IEEE ICCE-Asia 2020 and IEEE MWSCAS 2011.
Dr. Chung has published over 120 SCI (Science Citation Index) international journal papers (https://cnl.yonsei.ac.kr/publications) and holds over 150 patents in the CE (Consumer Electronics) field (which include over 17 USA patents) and received many awards (https://cnl.yonsei.ac.kr/professor) which include the ‘(Haedong) Award of Excellence’ (awarded in Jan. 2022) from the NAEK (National Academy of Engineering of Korea). In 2019 and 2021, he received the Minister’s ‘Award of Excellence’ from the MOIS (Ministry of Interior and Safety) of the Republic of Korea. In 2019, 2018, and 2008 he received the ‘Outstanding Accomplishment Faculty Award,’ and in 2021, 2019, 2014, 2009, and 2007 he received the ‘Outstanding Teaching Award’ from Yonsei University. In 2012, he received the Republic of Korea government’s DAPA (Defense Acquisition Program Administration) ‘Award of Excellence.’ From the Oklahoma State University, he received the 'Distinguished Faculty Award' in 2003 and 'Technology Innovator Award' in 2004, and the 'Halliburton 'Outstanding Young Faculty Award' (from the Halliburton Corporation) in 2005. In 2005 he received the 'Regents Distinguished Research Award,' which is the highest research award of the Oklahoma State Board of Regents and commonly considered as the highest lifetime research achievement award in the State of Oklahoma. He received this award at the age of 37, where he was the youngest recipient of this award. In 2000 he received the 'First Place Outstanding Paper Award' at the IEEE EIT 2000 conference held in Chicago, USA.
